How to talk to children about racism (RACescc)

Description
[This course will take you about 1h30min to complete.]

Racism is something that sadly exists in the world today, and something that you are going to have to talk to your foster children about. It’s not an easy subject to talk about. Some carers would prefer to protect their children from talking about it and might even feel uncomfortable discussing it. You might not know where to start. This course will give you some simple tools about how to adapt your conversation to the child’s age.

The children you care for might be scared, angry or confused about what they see on the news. Even if they aren’t a child belonging to an ethnic minority, they might not understand why some people treat other people differently, and worry that they will be treated unfairly.

In this course, you will learn:
- The meaning of racism and prejudice, and what it means to be anti-racist.
- The history and vocabulary of racism in today’s world.
- How to match the developmental needs of children, to effectively talk about racism.
- Techniques to talk to children about racism.
